Can images created with artificial intelligence be sold on stock sites?

Yes, But There Are Points to Consider
Today, AI-powered visual production tools are rapidly becoming widespread. With the right prompts, it is possible to produce high-quality content. This content has the potential to generate revenue by being sold on various stock image platforms. However, each platform has different attitudes and acceptance criteria for this content.
1. Which Platforms Accept AI-Generated Content Under What Conditions?
● Adobe Stock: Accepts, but is selective
Adobe Stock is one of the first major stock platforms to accept AI-generated images. However, the following conditions must be met:
• The “AI generated” label is mandatory.
• Anatomical accuracy is as important as image quality. Incorrect anatomies (e.g., extra fingers, distorted facial proportions) may result in the image being rejected.
• Images containing human faces are generally rejected. Model release may be required for faces resembling real people.
• Prompt information may occasionally be requested; therefore, it is advisable to record the prompts used during the production process.
Note: Based on my experience, AI-generated images containing faces are mostly rejected. Animal figures, however, may be accepted.

●Shutterstock: Only Allows Content Created with Its Own System
Shutterstock only accepts images created with its own artificial intelligence system. Uploading content created with external tools (such as Midjourney or Firefly) on this platform may result in account restrictions.
• Shutterstock collaborates with OpenAI to provide its own production tool to users.
• Users who want to sell AI content must use this tool to produce content.
● Freepik: Accepts AI Content, Emphasizes Style and Consistency
Freepik is a platform that takes a more flexible approach to AI content and is growing its market in this area. However, there are some important points to consider:
• The “AI generated” label is mandatory.
• It is recommended to upload images in a series with the same style and consistency (e.g., 10-15 images on the same theme).
• Uploading images in vector format increases the likelihood of acceptance.
• They are not as strict as Adobe regarding human faces; abstract or unclear faces may be accepted.
Additional Information: Freepik’s own AI tool can deliver successful results, particularly in the area of image enhancement.

● iStock / Getty Images: Does Not Accept AI Content at This Stage
iStock largely rejects content created with artificial intelligence. Due to its strict approach to copyright and ethical issues, acceptance of such content is limited.
• This platform is currently one of the most restrictive areas for AI content creators.
• It is important to stay informed about future policy changes.
Overall Assessment: Production is Easy, but Sales Require Strategy
While AI accelerates content production, the sales process on stock platforms requires careful planning. Each platform has different content policies, and images may be rejected for technical reasons.
Recommendations:
• Research platform-specific content policies and acceptance criteria in advance.
• Conduct technical and aesthetic checks on content before uploading.
• Be meticulous in tagging, descriptions, and category selection. These elements directly impact visibility and sales potential.
• Remember that effective presentation is just as important as fast production.
