How Necessary is 3D Modeling in the Age of Ready-Made Models and Artificial Intelligence?

Today, 3D modeling has become more accessible than ever before. Thousands of ready-made models can now be downloaded with just a few clicks from online libraries (CGTrader, TurboSquid, BlenderKit, etc.). Moreover, with AI-powered tools, it is even possible to create original 3D models using just an image or a short text. These developments have raised the question, especially among beginners: “Is learning 3D modeling still worth it?”

Are Ready-Made Models Always Sufficient?

Ready-made models can save a lot of time in many projects. These libraries are particularly useful in visualization, presentation, and prototyping phases. However, alongside these advantages, there are some important limitations:
-Ready-made models often do not fully align with projects. They require adjustments in terms of scaling, detail level, or design language.
-Optimization is often lacking. The surface topology, polygon count, and UV mapping of a model intended for use in a game or animation are of critical importance.
-You may not be able to find a 3D model that exactly matches your desired appearance.
Therefore, ready-made models can be a lifesaver, but they are not always sufficient for a sustainable production process.

Will Artificial Intelligence End the Modeling Process?

Artificial intelligence-powered modeling tools (such as Meshy AI) offer user-friendly solutions. However, as of today, these tools are mostly suitable for prototyping or idea development stages. The quality and control required for real-time applications, game engines, or production processes still necessitate manual intervention. However, in my personal opinion, considering the pace and diversity of AI development, it will have an impact on eliminating many professions or reducing the number of people practicing them.
This shows that today, 3D modeling knowledge is not only necessary for “drawing” but also for “managing production quality.” However, what the future holds is, of course, a difficult subject to predict.
In conclusion, basic 3D modeling knowledge can be considered an advantage, even a necessity, in today’s world. While ready-made content and artificial intelligence simplify production processes, 3D modeling skills are still necessary. To produce models tailored to specific needs and ensure quality, one must master the fundamentals of this field.
Especially in fields such as architecture, industrial design, game development, and animation, 3D modeling knowledge is not just an advantage but a necessity.
