Sound Effect

Hello, my name is Serhat Diri, and I would like to discuss the importance of sound effects in post-production and the consequences of their absence.

One of the most common mistakes in visual storytelling is to treat sound as secondary. In fact, the impact a video has on the viewer is not determined solely by the visuals or music.
“Sound effects” (SFX) are one of the elements that enhance the atmosphere of a scene, guide the viewer’s emotional state,
and add realism to the story. Whether the viewer is watching an advertisement, promotional video, etc., they must first
embrace it.

It is certainly one of the most important factors in music. To give a brief example, consider the film Titanic.
If you replace the music used in the scene where the ship sinks with a different type of music, you will lose the same sense of satisfaction.

I would like to give some examples without straying too far from the topic.

I will start with adding meaning to the story with sound effects.
You can convey that a character is alone without informing the audience. For example, when the sound of the character’s footsteps, the sound of them sipping their coffee, and the sound of the fabric of their clothes are brought to the forefront,
the character’s loneliness touches the audience.
I will continue with the use of sound effects in the film.

If you start with the sound of a character running in the distance while there is no movement in the image,
you will be curious about what will happen and stay engaged in the flow of the film without getting bored.

I’ll continue with the importance of sound effects in social media content.

There is a transition in the image. That is, there is a zoom effect between the two shots, but there is only music in the background of the video.
The angles are very good, and the music perfectly reflects the emotion, but it makes the dynamics of the video content
ordinary. In other words, the effort put into it continues halfway.

Another topic I will address is the preservation of reality.

You have excellent drone footage. The lighting is good. The weather conditions are just right. Let’s imagine a city
plan, with no sounds of people or traffic, no wind noise, no car horns.
These examples may vary depending on the video content. In short, without sound effects, the
feel of the 10-second drone footage is lost.

Furthermore, the choice of tone for the sound effects is crucial. Professionalism is lost.
The viewing experience is diminished. The perception of the content weakens.

Finally; For me, a video without sound effects is like a soulless person. Thank you…
